Die Londoner Tageszeitung „The Times“ hat den Salzburger Christkindlmarkt am Dom- und Residenzplatzt zu einem der fünf schönsten Märkte in ganz Europa gekürt.

Salzburg punktet mit Brauchtum

Besonders hervorgehoben wurden das Brauchtum mit den vielen alten Traditionen, sowie die täglichen Auftritte von Chören vor dem Dom. Weitere Adventmärkte in den Top 5 sind jene in Berlin, Straßburg, Göteborg und im englischen Bath.

Salzburg: Best for Carols and ancient traditions: The pretty hometown of Mozart and The Sound of Music comes into its own at Christmas, with snow-sprinkled renditions of ‘Silent Night’ (the carol was written and first performed nearby) and market stalls that look much as they did when they were first set up in the 15th century. The focus here is on quality over quantity, so expect hand-knitted socks rather than novelty candles. Join the free daily concerts at 5pm in front of the cathedral, or belt out carols at the Tuesday sing-alongs (6pm-8pm). Travel’s tip: Make the 90-minute bus journey to romantic St Wolfgang; on Wednesdays, this lakeside Christmas market is lit entirely by candles.
